On May 1st, Saturday, go the extra mile and run for a better Philippines as we celebrate the working Filipino at the 1st Annual Labor Day Run.

Even if Manila is known to be one of the most polluted cities in the world, I would have to admit that maybe, just maybe, the smog contributes to the awesome sunsets we experience. Having lived, worked, partied, and played in Makati, the capital's financial district, I would often see sunsets like the one above. It never fails to take my breath away.

This was taken on the banca (local boat) ride from Talipanan Beach to Batangas Pier. The sun was just setting when we left the island, and the colors were amazing. Just another one of the 7107 types of sunsets you will see in the Philippines.

FLASH MOB... Pinoy-style

In Facebook, I have posted videos of the flash mobs that have taken my attention. According to Wikipedia:

A flash mob (or flashmob) is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse.

The first one that got my attention (and moved me) was the flash mob at the Antwerp Central Train Station dancing to the Sound of Music's DOREMI. I love it.

Doesn't that make you feel lighter and giddier? A few days after Michael Jackson's death, a dance group in Sweden organized this flash mob in Stockholm to play tribute to the King of Pop. This one moved me to tears.

Of course, di mapuhuhuli ang Pinoy! Check out our very own Philippine flash mob, right in SM MOA last Aug 8. Dancing for Jollibee. I ♥ it!!! This was a project of Stratworks. Zaney, if you are reading this, I wanna be part of the next flash mob!!!

Manila Bay is legendary for its great sunsets. Seeing one of these on top of a yacht dancing with your girlfriends is, to say the least, SPECTACULAR. To put it simply:

Today is Cory Aquino's Day

Our beloved Cory will be laid to rest today. It's been a long time since we mourned someone this much. A lot of tributes has been shown and done about Cory. But this video should remind all young Filipinos how blessed we are to have the freedom we are enjoying right now. This is President Cory Aquino giving a historic speech at a joint session of the US Congress in 1986.

Talking about she lost Ninoy 3 times. The standing ovation and the long applause she got from the Congressmen was very moving. Makes you proud to be Filipino.

She talks about the snap elections and the People Power Revolution, and her commitment to her people and to God.

Corazon C. Aquino is truly an amazing woman. May all Filipinas strive to be like her. May she finally rest in peace, back in Ninoy's arms.

There was a time that Urbiztondo in San Juan, La Union had few visitors from Manila. Back in the days when only a handful were aware of this surfspot up north, we would travel there in my trusty SUV and try to "ride the waves". This was taken during that time, when the beach was still wide, and no new structures were put up. Back then, it was only the Hacienda, Sebay, and the Surfer's Resort that had guests. When we would go across the road to "manang's" sari-sari store for some grub. And the best form of entertainment was drinking with the locals till 4am, only to get up and catch the waves at 5am.

Urbiztondo will always be my surfspot. Nearly all types of surfers (beginners to pros) can surf its waves. Due to its increasing popularity and the influx of Manila tourists, as well as foreign ones, prices have inevitably gone up. Nevertheless, it is still quite cheap and is perfect for a weekend getaway.

He just also finished his successful China Tour with DJ JOHN ROBINSON wherein they both invaded Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Tienjin and Wuhan. There is a bug going around. It has swept up my friends, family and everyman on the street! It starts with the words, "I want nobody nobody but you", followed by clapping and the sway-sway of the hips.

Yes, the Wonder Girls have invaded my hood. And it is spreading likeH1N1!!

I know I heard it first some months ago at a show in UP Diliman. But suddenly, this song has been gaining popularity. Maybe because it already has the English version? The melody is catchy, very bubblegum pop. And the dance moves! My gawd! In the tradition of cheesy foreign songs like "Macarena", "Asereje" and the "Ketchup Song", "Nobody" has its own set of moves. In typical Asian fashion, the dance moves are both "pa-cute" and sexy, mixing a lot of clapping, hand movements, and hip thrusts.

And true enough, every Baklita, Nene, and Totoy have been dancing and singing and clapping to it. I swear, this is gonna rival Beyonce's "Single Ladies" with fans posting their own version on Youtube.

3.The Prize

UK Tour – The chosen finalist from the Philippines will go on a 10-12 day tour of the UK along with the 9 other country finalists from around the world participating in the programme. The UK tour is an opportunity for these finalists to learn more about the UK fashion industry as well as meet with UK industry experts. This will culminate with the finalist attending London Fashion Week in February 2010.

The overall winner (to be chosen in an awarding ceremony held during the UK tour) will receive:

A physical award – a special commission bowl by acclaimed glass designers, Gillies Jones

A financial prize of £5,000 - to be spent on a project in collaboration with the British Council that builds the relationship between the winner’s country and the UK

Two of my most favorite things are (1) traveling and (2) taking pictures. If you check my facebook, I have over 2,000 pictures most of them taken while traveling with my crazy friends.

Cebu Pacific has come up with a cool contest that marries these two = travel + photography. The contest is called "Wandering Juan" and is open to all Cebu Pacific customers (local and foreign). Pictures taken of your travels from July 1 to October 31, 2009 are eligible for the contest.

The cool thing about this is, the pictures should feature the ubiquitous flip flops! Oh yes, the lowly "tsinelas" is now taking center stage in Wandering Juan! Creative pictures featuring the "tsinelas" (a.k.a. flip-flops, slippers) should fall under the following categories: Sights, People, and Travelogue.

I've started an Awesome Sunsets photo series. I'll feature the various sunsets that have been captured by me or my friends during our travels. Most of the pictures will come from my trips around the Philippine islands because, as the Wow Philippines video states, we have 7107 islands thus giving us 7107 kinds of sunsets (and more). Up on the northern tip of Cebu is the paradise island of Malapascua. The laid-back alternative to party-central Boracay, it offers the same ingredients of a postcard-perfect vacation: white sand, crystal clear blue waters, excellent dive spots, milkshakes, fruit shakes, tropical food, and of course AWESOME sunsets. You will be hard-pressed to find a bumping, thumping party on the island. But relaxing moments are aplenty. To date, I have been there 3 times already. I never get tired of it.

But the thing I want to experience the most in Amsterdam would be to go to a Sensation White (or Black) Party. Hoowa!

So I, together with fellow couchsurfers DJ Yabis and Liliane Cobiao, were featured in the Manila Bulletin Travel Magazine last May 14. We shared our Couchsurfing and travelling experiences. They even published a picture of me!! Picture shows me, Charlotte de Grosse, Jonathan Pinvidic, Cedric, Lucie Legrand, Jean-Baptiste Heno, Alex Lind, and Linus Monten; when we were at Pinatubo. WOOHOO!!

I have been an active member of CS (or Couchsurfing.org) for several years, even hosting the weekly meet-up for the community. It is a unique traveling experience as well as a distinct mindset. I'm very proud to be a CS member.

"Cebu Pacific make Couchsurfers’ travel dreams come true"

How would you feel if someone you’ve never seen before knocks on your door and asks permission to sleep on your couch? The default answer for most may be “no”, but for a growing number of people all over the world, the response is a “yes”; this paves the way for making everyone’s travel dreams come true. They are called couchsurfers.

The term was born in 2003 when Casey Fenton established The CouchSurfing Project, an online community of travelers seeking and offering their homes and company to travelers. Since it began, the site has not just helped the modern and budget-minded vagabond fulfill his travel wishes; but also provide many opportunities for meaningful cultural exchange.

Ever-thrifty, determined to explore and genuinely warm, Filipino travelers are taking a shine to CouchSurfing (nicknamed CS), opening their hearts and homes to fellow wanderers from around the globe. Meet Lilliane Cobiao, DJ Yabis and Jehan Machacon. As active members of the local CS community, they give couchsurfers a home in the Philippines, showcase the best of the country and gain life-long friends in the process, all while doing what they love the most—traveling.

Welcoming the world

Lilliane, an avid diver who works for the family business, finds it rewarding when her guests end up staying longer than expected. She tells the story of a German who extended his stay by two months before going back home. He is now moving his business to Asia and comes to the Philippines when he can just to visit her and her family.

“I also met a German girl—also a couchsurfer—in Bali,” she narrates. “We met because we had the same hosts in Jakarta and Bandung. I caught up with her and we clicked. She loved Bali so much but I said Boracay is better, so she’s coming this December and I’m hosting her.”

“It is best when locals show a foreign guest around because they can show you things and places that are not in the guidebooks,” adds Jehan, an entrepreneur and business consultant who has been hosting and traveling with couchsurfers for more than three years. Through their trips, she has showcased the charms of Palawan, Cebu, Caramoan in Camarines Sur, Mt. Pinatubo and Anawangin Cove in Zambales, Sagada, and the Manila night life, among others.

The low-cost airline is one of the best allies of the budget traveler.

At first glance, a life of constant traveling may seem costly, but Jehan and others like her find ways to make it work. Budget airlines like Cebu Pacific enable them to fly often and spend more time at chosen destinations.

“We’re in a big archipelago so traveling is not easy. You really have to go by plane or boat to explore… Via boat is cheap but it will take you like a day to get there, so it’s good that there are low-cost airlines to help us discover other places in the Philippines,” she explains. Recently, she booked Cebu Pacific flights for herself and her CS friends so they can enjoy the world-famous Boracay beach together. Because of such affordable travel options, Jehan is able to achieve her real mission as a couchsurfer.

“I want to show them the Philippines that I know—that we are a nice country and with very nice people,” she explains. “The mission is to show that the Philippines is a great place—via traveling together, hanging out, meeting up, having coffee or drinks, and just being good friends to them. It satisfies me when they would always want to come back and try to live here because they really like our country.”

On his part, DJ—an engineering graduate who dreams of living in Scandinavia—brings the vibe of his country with him on his travels. “The Filipinos have a reputation of being one of the happiest people in the world. I try to maintain that reputation,” he shares.

What else is possible?

It was in 2007 when Lillian first wondered about people who went traveling for a year. She could not help but ask online, “How do you do it?” This was how she learned about CS. A week after signing up, she received a request from an American missionary and agreed to host him.

“He was a CS ambassador and he gave me a crash course in couchsurfing, and I immediately got the whole concept of it. I then started requesting to couchsurf in Europe… I went to Barcelona and Madrid,” she happily narrates.

For DJ, it’s also about the perspective that CS provides. “When I traveled last year, I surfed couches all over southeast Asia,” he shares. “I experienced the lives of so many people: a Malaysian professor, a Spanish expat working for the UN, a Singaporean geographer who does urban planning for the Singaporean government, a French engineer living with his French friends in Bangkok, a Thai guy who’s friends with Imelda Marcos… These people enhanced my travel experience immensely.”

Through experiences such as these, CS has really helped change the way people perceive travel. For members of the community, flying is no longer just a means to get to a destination but also to live outside the box.

DJ sums it up, “I love the way couchsurfers come together as people and change each other with our life experiences. Being a couchsurfer has changed my life positively on so many levels. I’ve met so many couchsurfers and one thing I’ve noticed is that they are the type to turn their dreams into reality.”

Boracay Island in the Philippines has always produced gorgeous sunsets (and sunrises). I've been flying to Boracay for several years now, either for a vacation or work, and it still never fails to take my breath away. The awesome sunsets in the Boracay horizon is best experienced with a Jonah's milkshake, or a cold San Mig Light beer, in hand with your friends sitting on the powdery fine Boracay sand beside you.

Embassy Club Closed

Just saw the news online this morning. This was also confirmed by my friends in the bar/club industry (yeah, I get my news online only as I rarely have time for tv and radio). Different articles have already popped out, basically saying the same story (Philstar.com, GMAnewstv, etc). A balikbayan got into a fight with a "DJ". In my opinion, this is the best article about the incident (I just found it entertaining to read, grabbed my attention more). It's from the Journal Online (www.journal.com.ph).

The thing is, contrary to what is written, Pauly Mac is not a DJ. He is an "MC", meaning he raps and hosts will the actual DJ provides the music. I've seen him perform every Wednesday at Embassy and even bumped into him whenever we go to an after-hours club in Burgos (yes, yes, I know it's the red light district. But this is the place to go when all the clubs are closed, like around 5am. More of this in another post). In fact, my friends and I were there at Embassy when this fight happened.

Pauly Mac was doing his thing and moved around the dance floor while MC-ing, mic in hand. I even said hi and made beso with Pauly (but I doubt it if he remembers my name) when he was near my group. We were enjoying the music and the company of our friends, when suddenly one of male friends lunged at something behind us. A commotion occurred. Bouncers appeared out of nowhere, trying to separate this white guy and Pauly Mac. My friend was in the fray trying to talk to some people. We were all asking "What the eff is going on?" and some of us tried to pull our friend away and pleading with him to "wag na makialam". Apparently, our friend got pushed and was trying to reason with the guy who allegedly pushed him (mejo magulo na ang kwento at this point). Basta, we just tried to get our friend out of the whole situation.

From my vantage point, the bouncers were apparently separating the parties involved. Later on, we saw the white guy and Pauly shake hands and talk, so we thought it was ok na. Only when I read the news did I realize that there were more people involved in the incident.

Tsk tsk.

This is not the first time though that we saw Pauly in a "commotion". One Wednesday a few weeks back, we were in Cafeteria for an after-party meal (breakfast na yon). Pauly, a few girls, and this blonde guy (who we met the night before in Tabu and is a friend of our friend, Kian) were seated in the next table (or booth). Then we heard a guy's voice booming "You are saying that to ME", then some scuffling of chairs, and girls screaming. We popped our heads out to see what it was all about, and our male friends sprung into action. They went and separated the two guys, while another friend of ours sort of tried to talk and pacify the girls and the blonde guy. By this time, the bouncers were already there. (I'm telling you, mabilis ang mga bouncers sa Embassy). I had to pull our male friends back to our table and pleaded with them to not meddle anymore in the fight, kase the bouncers are there naman. Both guys in the altercation were apparently drunk.

I got to talk to the blonde guy (Pinoy sya na dyed blonde lang ang hair) the next night when I bumped into him and Kian sa M Cafe. I told him about my friends and I witnessing his "argument" with Pauly M. He explained what happened and why he reacted that way.

I've seen these many times, in different bars/clubs or parties, in different cities. Inebriation makes people feel powerful and invincible. Every little thing would tick off a very drunk insecure person. Kahit tingin lang na masama, gagawing excuse na yan to fight. Although I'm glad that most of my male barkada are not war freaks (may mga malakas uminom pero hindi basagulero), I sometimes would find myself in this "situation".

The best thing to do is to remain calm, and try to make the "worked up" party to calm down. The bouncers will be there to provide the necessary muscle. Girls should always try to get help from security or the police. Trust me, screaming and shouting at the men who have "blood" in their eyes is futile. Hindi ka maririnig nyan.

Sayang lang when these things happen. A good night out is ruined when hotheads get involved in altercations. Masaya ang gimik when there is good music, great company, and walang gulo. Dami ng ngang problema, magdadagdag pa tayo.

Good vibes lang po.

Thanks to everyone for making MAGIS: THE GATHERING an amazing success!

More than a hundred of our batchmates showed up last night, filling Mag:Net Bonifacio High Street to overflowing! The beer kept coming as hosts Francis Diaz, Jehan Machacon, Heidi Ng, TonyPet Sarmiento, and Ken Lingan kept us laughing.

Mike Elgar and the rest of Rivermaya entertained us with a rockin' set of both old favorites and new compositions. Several of our batchmates gamely showed off their stuff by taking to the mic for our Rock-e-oke with the Johnnys, but it was Celeste Jumadla and Iyay Dumdum who walked away with the Havoc-Xurpas College Idol award for their jaw-dropping rendition of "I Will Survive."

It wasn't a full-fledged Blue Roast, but it was close, as we gave out other awards throughout the night: Hazel Gan won the award for having the Bumblebee Youngest Baby. Lai Gotao won the loudest applause for the Pond's Age-Defying Di Ka Nagbago award.

Fr. Dacanay handed the San Miguel Mahaba-habang Inuman award to Tonypet and Lizanne Sarmiento for being the longest-lasting couple at the reunion (13 years and counting). Fr. Dacanay didn't go home empty-handed either; for coming in his smart barong, the batch chose him as the Giorgio Armani Dressed to Kill awardee! Leanne Marcelino and Kristine Kintanar, roommates in New York City, beat Wesley Lao(Palawan) and Angie Resurreccion (Davao) for the Globe Abot Mo Ang Mundo Award: the batchmate who had travelled the farthest to make it to the reunion!

For the Trivia Game, neither of the teams could remember the Th 131 definition for love (tsk! tsk!) but our batchmates nonetheless impressed us with their ability to rattle off the names of our P.E. instructors in college, not to mention their ability to recall their own ID numbers.

Our awardees won GCs from Reyes Barbeque, Bed, Fuzion, and Sasha; Nike merchandise; fragrance from Ralph Lauren, Cacharel, and Giorgio Armani; Dymo labelers; and Bumblebee costumes. We also raffled off a case of San Miguel Super Dry and prizes from Maybelline and L'Oreal Revitalit. And each guest went home with an overflowing lootbag with products from Shu Uemura, Ralph Lauren, Dove, Surf, Domex, Ponds, Rexona, Clear, Modess, L'Oreal Revitalift, Giorgio Armani, Diesel, Marie Claire, and Sunsilk.

It was an amazing night of nostalgic reminiscences, catching up with old friends, and seeing familiar faces. Thanks to everyone who helped with the preparations, with finding sponsorships, with spreading the word .... And of course, thank you thank you thank you to everyone who came!!!

Fr. Huang's Homily at the Ateneo Baccalaureate Mass 2008

My batchmates in ADMU sent me this email. As we are going to have our 10th year Reunion on May 23, memories of college have been flashing through my waking life these past few weeks. The homily struck a chord, definitely. I still remember the idealism, the freshness, the raw feeling, the innocence of being a new graduate... sheltered from what was the "real world", yet ready to be unleashed and to be immersed in it. Now, 10 years later, a lot of things has changed...some for the better, some not necessarily better. So I let you read first Fr Huang's message while I tackle the significance of his words. Will post my reflections on this later.

Homily for the Ateneo de Manila Loyola Schools
Baccalaureate Mass

Dear members of the Class of 2008:
As I was thinking of you and what to say to you this morning, I remembered two things: a song and a cartoon. The song is from a musical some of you are familiar with, Avenue Q, sung by the fresh college graduate, Princeton:

What do you do with a B.A. in English,
What is my life going to be?
Four years of college and plenty of knowledge,
Have earned me this useless degree.
I can't pay the bills yet,
'Cause I have no skills yet,
The world is a big scary place.
But somehow I can't shake,
The feeling I might make,
A difference,
To the human race.

The second thing I remembered was a cartoon strip from the popular series Cathy. Cathy, filling up a job application, is telling her friend Andrea: "How about if I put down that my goal is to be president of a major corporation and make a $100,000 a year?" Andrea, looking puzzled, asks: "I thought you wanted to get married and live in a little white house with 2 cute kids?" Cathy answers with rising enthusiasm: "That's my goal too! I want everything Andrea! I'm going to do it all!" The last image shows Cathy, suddenly coming down to earth, saying: "All I need now is a job and a date."

Friends, I remembered this song and this cartoon because I think they capture the mix of feelings many of you are probably feeling on this very important day in your life. I suspect that many of you feel at least three feelings. First, relief (which, incidentally, I believe your parents, who had to pay all the bills, feel even more than you do!): tapos na!; wala nang exams; wala nang projects; most importantly, wala nang Dacanay! Second, hope: like Cathy or Princeton, a sense of "Now I can make my dreams come true! I'm going to make a difference! My life is about to start!" Third, fear or at least anxiety: "Yesâ€”but first, I've got to pay the bills, I need to find a jobâ€”and maybe find a date, too. Baka pagkatapos ng lahat ng philo orals at Bobby Guevara exposures, ang bagsak ko call center agent pa rin!"

Relief, hope and anxiety: not abnormal emotions at all, because today something is truly ending in your life and something else beginning. On this day then, when your life is changing, perhaps more than you know, we pray for you. We pray that you go "down from the hill" with three gifts for your life ahead, three gifts inspired by today's Gospel reading.

First, we pray that your relief may deepen into gratitude. Yes, it's all over. You made it. But if you look more deeply, you might recognize, like the disciples in today's Gospel, that the achievement of these past four years was not simply the result of your striving, but a gift much like the miraculous catch of fish that surprised the unsuspecting disciples.

I certainly see this more clearly from the perspective of twenty-eight years after my own graduation from the Ateneo. For the past week, I have been working quite intensely with our Jesuit Commission on the Social Apostolate, analyzing our present national crisis and searching for ways to respond. What struck me most the other day was how so many of us in that committee, both Jesuits and lay, were products of the Ateneo and were doing what we were doing precisely because of what the Ateneo gave us beyond our expectations. Dr. Jing Karaos was our president in AtSCA; Fr. Bobby Yap was president of CLC and one of the co-founders of SOA; Dean Antonio La ViÃ±a was our classmate in philosophy and fellow member of ACIL; Dr. Benjie Tolosa was one of the freshmen we senior members of the Sanggu eyed as promising leadership material. Here we were almost three decades later, all middle-aged; yet the capacity to think critically and in a nuanced way, the passion to serve our country, the Christian faith that motivates that passion to serve, and our friendships that have endured over the years were all gifts of the Ateneo to us, things we received rather than achieved. I look at you and I am sure you have received the same gifts we did: rigorous intellectual formation, a passion for nation-building, deepened faith and spirituality, and really life-giving friendships. Thus, our first prayer: may your relief deepen into gratitude.

Second, we pray that your hope be broadened by responsibility. What do I mean? I'm glad that what you have received from the Ateneo will enable you to fulfill your hopes and dreams for yourself and your loved ones. But, as Pope Benedict has reminded us in his recent encyclical:

"Our hope is always essentially hope for others. . . . we should never limit ourselves to asking: how can I save myself? We should also ask: what can I do in order that others may be saved and that for them too the star of hope may rise?" (Spe Salvi, 48). Thus, our second prayer: that your hope be broadened by responsibility; that you expand your dreams to include always a deep sense of responsibility for the future of our country and our people, especially the poor. The disciples in today's Gospel began fishing for themselves and for their own livelihood; they ended up becoming fishers of men and women, drawing in the net for the Lord. So, we pray, it may be with you.

Just think of this last dramatic year of your life in college. For a while, so much attention was taken up by the sometimes silly and self-absorbed debates about the dress code. These gave way, thankfully, to larger and more real concerns. So many of you supported the Sumilao farmers, marching with them into the Ateneo from Cubao, applauding them as they entered our campus, walking with them to Malacanang, visiting them at the DAR offices. So many of you were moved by how their heroic sacrifice of walking thousands of kilometers in scorching heat or in the midst of a terrifying typhoon, was inspired by the simple but profound dreams of the poor: land, security, a better life for their children. Many of you too found yourselves in the midst of yet another national crisis, found yourselves moved to rally for truth along Katipunan or in the streets of Makati, sharing the shame many of us feel that Ateneans are among the forces of deception and self-interest that have caused the suffering of our country, sharing the pride too that other Ateneans have been on the side of truth and reform. I believe that all of this has been part of your Ateneo experience to remind you that our lives, in the end, are not about ourselves, and to invite you to dream and hope not just for yourself, but in responsibility for the future of our country and our people.

Finally, we pray that your anxiety may be tempered by faith, a faith that is really a deep trust in the One who is always near but whom we often don't recognize, as the disciples in the Gospel did not recognize him as he stood by the shore at daybreak.

Your anxiety and fear are all too human, and, I am afraid, justified, I wish it were not so, but we are sending you off today into a world that is complex, often crazy, shot through with darkness and danger. You're graduating into a world of unstable financial markets, of global terrorism and fear, of political instability and corruption. The days when you could just put down "Ateneo" on your resumÃ© and be assured of a job are, I'm afraid, over. There are so many more choices before you, and commitments will be harder to make or maintain. And yet, whatever lies ahead of you, we pray that you walk in the confidence of faith. The great German Jesuit theologian, Karl Rahner, said it very simply: Keine zufall, nur gnade. "There are no accidents; only grace." How you ended up in the Ateneo, from one point of view, is the result of sheer chance and contingency: your family background, your ambitions, a lucky break. But from the point of view of faith, your having been part of the Ateneo is part of a provident, caring plan for your life; a plan of love, divine love. I guess that's really what I want to say to you: there is a plan for your life, even if you don't see all the succeeding steps so clearly now. Whatever lies ahead of you beyond the hills of Loyola, then, you can walk without fear, for if you but open yourself to your God and seek to listen to his voice speaking in the everydayness of your life, you will be led to your deepest happiness and your greatest fruitfulness.

Dear graduates of the class of 2008, relieved, hopeful, anxious friends, these then are our prayers for you as you leave the Ateneo today: may your relief deepen into gratitude; may your hope broaden responsibility; may your anxiety be tempered by faith. Grateful, responsible, faithful Ateneans, may you thus be for our world and our time truly Lux in Domino, Light in the Lord.

Before I end, I wish to name a final feeling that I believe some of you feel and that I have not mentioned till now: sadness. Last night, I read a poem of one of your batch mates on his Multiply site, and it seemed to me a very sad poem. Of course. The Ateneo has been more than a school for many of us; it has become a home and it is always sad to leave home. I don't think there's anything I can say to take away that quiet sadness: it's just there; college is over. Allow me to address that sadness though with a scene from a novel.

I began with Avenue Q and Cathy; allow me to end now, hopefully with a little more intellectual respectability, as befits the Ateneo, with Dostoyevsky. In the final chapter of his great novel, The Brothers Karamazov, the monk Alyosha, the good and gentle brother, says goodbye to a group of boys he has befriended and mentored. They are sad because they must part. In their sadness, Alyosha invites his young friends to remember: to remember always the days of their friendship and camaraderie. I ask you to remember always, he tells them. Because, he says in a memorable phrase, a good memory is the best education. We will leave each other and go our separate ways. Life will happen to us and change us, sometimes, not for the better. But, Alyosha adds, if life tempts us to become cynical or bitter or cruel, if we remember these golden days of our friendship, if we remember how we dreamed together, how we were kind to one another, how we were good, then maybe, just maybe, that memory will save us, and draw us away from the forces of darkness that are always threatening to vanquish and capture us.

"A good memory is the best education." This then is the final wish of all of us here in the Ateneo who bid you farewell and Godspeed today. Remember. May you always remember the "joys and tears, the laughing years," the friendships and dreams of your days at the Ateneo. May these memories bring you joy, bring you salvation, take you back home. God bless you always.

Hello! Still Here!

Wow.

I just realized that it's been ages since I last posted here (mga 5 months na). Been quite busy with projects, life, and other emo things. I need to purge some of my thoughts though, as a lot had happened these past months. Some current events also made me think about the general direction of my blog, my business, my life. Why the deep existentialist questions? Hmmmm, maybe because I'm getting old. Maybe I have outgrown the phase that this blog centers on. Maybe it's time to move on to other things.

Let's see....

I haven't blogged about my changing of careers (Update: I am now into the events/marketing business, and most recently got a job at a record label). A major change in lifestyle and mindset. But at least I've been able to follow my dream. I changed residences 3 times since my last update about my home (Update: I am now back in condo mode). Been to several parties, events, and trips. Met numerous people (some good, most not worth mentioning).

There's a nagging feeling though, that there must be something more that I could do than what I'm currently doing. It must be "nagging" me because I haven't had time to pause, reflect, dissect on this issue (syempre, ang tagal ko nga di nakapagsulat eh).

Let's start the (blog)rolling then... (coming up: post on the current "high" society issue)

Today, I came across this 18-minute video/trailer of a DVD encouraging vocations to the priesthood sent to me by my singles community yahoogroups. I know I have only posted about parties and events lately, and I felt that I should share or at least say something about this moving video.

A lot of people accuse the Catholic Church of being too "old" or "traditional" or "passe", unwilling to change with the times. On some aspects, I may half-heartedly agree with some critics, but generally, I understand the wisdom of the theological stance of the Church. The Church is rich with tradition and symbolisms that have carried its faithful throughout centuries. True, it may be an organization built by men, run by men, and can be stained by mistakes made by men. But we cannot deny the deep, profound spirituality and wisdom that the Church has. This very wisdom has sustained many a man's life throughout time. The collective spirituality and insight of the people who make up the Church is a treasure trove that today's individual can revel in. Thus, an individual can very much attain self-realization from the Church's traditions and practices.

This I know and have studied, but unfortunately, this I haven't practiced lately. It's hard to be consistently spiritual in this world I move in.

The video struck me deeply as it reminded me the wonderful friendships I had with my teachers (Jesuits) who acted, not only as my teachers, but also as my mentors, spiritual directors, counselors, attorneys, friends, and guides. I have seen schoolmates/friends who have been called upon to be fishers of men. One moment, they sit next to you in class, an average Atenean. The next moment, they are enveloped in a rich aura of contentment, as they have heeded the "call". I have great respect for these men, who have given up their lives "so that others might live".

Priesthood is not just about celibacy or bachelorhood. It is the sacrificing of worldly pleasures to attain a higher level of self. It is the sacrificing of the self for the greater good. It is the life of service to do the work of God. It is a great sacrifice, one that I think is more difficult to do now given the very selfish culture of today's world.

My world today involves the very things young people enjoy: booze, parties, the fast life. It is a struggle sometimes to stay true to one's self and one's beliefs, and not be carried away by other people's influence. There are many temptations, and these test one's character every time. Rarely do I find a person who has sincerity and depth of character and old-fashioned values. It is always about the latest fashion, the latest music, who is "cool", who has the latest gadget, etc. When I meet a person (and I meet a lot of people, mind you) that has values and character, I cherish this person as a friend and keep him/her. For it is the heart that is important, and not the material trappings that come with it. And for the priests in this world, and those who have heeded the "call", their hearts are the best by far, in my opinion. Cheers to you, Fishers of Men!

IMF: RP growth will buck Asia slowdown

THE International Monetary Fund has lowered its growth projection for Asia this year due to the weakening US economy, but it raised its outlook on the Philippines and expects it to post the strongest growth in Southeast Asia next to Singapore.

The Fund raised its growth forecast for the Philippines to 6.3 percent from 5.8 percent in July, and mainly because of the country's relatively stable prices and low inflation.

Philippine inflation is forecast at 3 percent this year and at 4 percent next year, well within the government's targets, the Fund says in the fall edition of its World Economic Outlook released yesterday.

It says economic growth in the Philippines , Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia would average at 5.6 percent and inflation at 4 percent, with Indonesia forecast to grow by 6.2 percent, Thailand by 4 percent, and Malaysia by 5.8 percent.

Singapore is forecast to expand by 7.5 percent.

"Growth in emerging Asia remained exceptionally rapid in the first half of 2007," the Fund said in its review.

It says growth in the region will be led by China, which is expected to expand by 11.5 percent, and India , which is forecast to grow by 8.9 percent.

"Growth appears to have remained buoyant in the third quarter, with global financial market volatility having a limited impact on the region to date, although the weaker outlook for the advanced economies is likely to slow export growth going forward," the Fund said.

"Among the Asean 4 economies, some rebound in Thailand is expected as confidence recovers to offset modest slowdowns in Malaysia and the Philippines."

The Fund says robust remittances and increased government spending will drive growth in the Philippines.

It says turbulence in the financial markets clouded prospects, but its 2007 forecast was little affected because the global economy grew strongly in the first half of the year.

It sees the Philippines growing by 5.8 percent next year, Indonesia by 6.1 percent, Thailand by 4.5 percent, and Malaysia by 5.6 percent—with their economic expansion averaging at 5.5 percent.

"The balance of risks to the baseline growth outlook is clearly on the downside," the Fund says in its report.

"While the underlying fundamentals supporting growth are sound and the strong momentum in emerging economies is intact, downside risks emanating from the financial markets and domestic demand in the United States and Western Europe have increased."

The Fund sees the global economy growing by 5.2 percent this year and by 4.8 percent in 2008, supported by generally sound fundamentals and strong momentum in the emerging market economies.

"In the face of turbulent conditions in financial markets, the baseline projections for global growth have been marked down moderately, although growth is still expected to continue at a solid pace," the Fund said.

It says the recent re-pricing of risk and increased discipline in credit markets could strengthen the foundations for future expansion, but it also raises the near-term risks to growth.

"The extent of the impact on growth will depend on how quickly more normal market liquidity returns and on the extent of the retrenchment in credit markets," the Fund said.

"An extended period of tight credit conditions could have a significant dampening effect on housing markets in the United States and in some European countries."

Father Ferriols Honored Yet Again

Most Ateneans know Father Ferriols. My college roommates took up Ferriols as their Philosophy teacher (we were fortunate enough that the legendary professor was still actively teaching when we were in ADMU). Being a Cebuana and more comfortable with the English language than Tagalog, I decided to go the other route and took Philosophy classes in English (Fr Ferriols taught philosophy in TAGALOG!). But as midterm or final exams came, I would be listening in as my roommates would discuss their Philosophy lessons. There's a certain depth that the Tagalog language injects in the philosophical discussions. I would say, Tagalog makes it more robust...mas may laman. This, made me appreciate Filipino philosophers and Father Ferriols more. Although I didn't have him as my teacher, I still hold Fr. Ferriols with the highest regard as I saw how profoundly he touched my roommates' lives.

Now, he has received another honor. Fr. Roque J. Ferriols, SJ, Professor Emeritus, Department of Philosophy, Ateneo de Manila Univeristy, has been chosen as one of the four educators of this year's search for the "Many Faces of the Teacher" organized by the Bato Balani Foundation Inc. and Diwa Learning Systems Inc. Pinoy Animated Short Film Competes in Cinemanila International Film Festival

Andrea, Andrew and I were fortunate enough to catch the premiere of the first fully-Pinoy-animated short film, "Libingan", produced by my friend Ben and company at Tuldok Animation Studios Inc at the CCP Little Theater last July 17. This was a film that was made out of sheer love of animation. They recently competed in the Cinemanila International Film Festival last Saturday, Aug 11. Visit their website for more info. "Libingan," a 20-minute animated short film produced by Tuldok Animation Studios Inc. is set to compete in the Young Cinema Night of Cinemanila International Film Festival. The films in competition will be shown this Saturday, 11 August 2007, around 7PM at Gateway Mall's Cinema 4 in Araneta Center.

Tuldok Animation Studios Inc. is a non stock, non profit organization that aims to promote the creative talent of the Filipino artist through animation. This all volunteer group made this film in a span of almost two years during their spare time, making the most out of their limited resources, at their individual homes.

Discovering The Secret

I first heard about it in Carlos Celdran's blog, then read about it in Chuvaness'. One time, about some weeks ago, I saw it in my friend Michelle's nightstand. Since then, I couldn't get it out of my mind. Recently, I purchased my own copy of it, The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.

It discusses the Law of Attraction and how your thoughts can change what you receive in life. I am past the middle of the book, and am starting to practice its suggested exercises. Hopefully, everything I ask for will come true! Wish me luck. :)

`Tis a time of reunions. Some of the biggest acts of my youth are coming together this year to do some albums or tours. WOW! So exciting. When will this reunion concerts come to our shores? (Incidentally, do you think Rivermaya will do a reunion tour/show in the future now that they have disbanded? *sigh* Sayang talaga yun.)

The Spice Girls

Posh, Scary, Baby, Ginger, and Sporty are going to tour this year. Reunited, the Spice Girls (almost all are mommies now) will start their tour on December 7 2007 in LA. Already in their 30s, the former girl-band members are still in the headlines with Posh (aka Victoria) having the most mileage (she is married to hot David Beckham, thus the press attention). Posh and Becks (as they are fondly called) have moved to LA where Becks will start playing with LA Galaxy after a rousing finish with Real Madrid. Scary (aka Mel B) just figured in a controversy with Eddie Murphy over the paternity of her child. Baby (aka Emma) just had a baby (parang mali yung sentence na yun a. oh well).

The Smashing Pumpkins

It started with Billy Corgan's full-page plea for a reunion in the Chicago Tribune. The original drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin is in. According to Rolling Stone, guitarist James Iha is not in the new Smashing Pumpkins line-up. Most likely, original bassit D'Arcy Wretzky won't be part of it also, as she has strained relations with Corgan. Melissa Auf de Maur, who toke over Wretzly's bass responsibilities, already gave indications that she is willing to join the new SP. The new SP will also be touring starting July 2007. I remember having a collection of tapes of the popular alternative/grunge rock bands when I was in college, one of which was the SP album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness". I kept listening to "Bullets with Butterfly Wings" and "Tonight, Tonight". Really, that whole period had some of the best-written songs courtesy of Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.

Rage Against the Machine

After splitting up in 2000, the hard-core band Rage Against the Machine played together again in the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last April 2007. There are rumors of more performances and even a full tour for the band.

Aside from the ones mentioned above, there are also whispers of a Van Halen reunion, and The Cure comeback. In the local front, I hope Eraserheads will give us 90's babies the thrill of seeing them performing together. Pwede mangarap, di ba?

I realize that I haven't really posted anything about me the past few months. I always say "just got back from so-and-so... will post a longer entry soon...blah blah blah". It's either that, or I just post the flyers for the events we have. No real news.

No wonder my friends have been bugging me about the latest happenings in my life. Time flies so fast. I wasnt even able to blog about my trips last year, my awesome New Year's weekend in Boracay, my career shift, my paradigm shifts (major major life moment, I tell you!), my new apartment/house, my plans, my dreams, my angst... DAMI GRABE!!!

Of course, my excuses are the same: no time, very busy, life is hectic, no internet... etc etc..Buti pa si Sidse P, she was able to blog more often than me! O sha, let me collect my thoughts and start blogging often.

For now, I leave you with this lamentation. Will blog better soon.

We're Gonna Partly Like It's My Bday!

Today is my birthday.

I am no longer a 20-something (pakshet! no more writing a beginning number "2" whenever I fill out the "Age" portion of any form). Malapit na rin akong mawala sa kalendaryo. Ayayay!

So this is how it feels. To be on the fence. To have one foot on the "young-wild-and-carefree" ground, and another one on "growing old-tired-cynical-but-deeply-insightful" territory. I am on both. And I think, most likely, I will be sitting on that fence for a long time. I don't want to lose my youthful enthusiasm, yet I see the world through the eyes of an old, wisened woman.

I'm having dinner tonight with my Adobo Gang (with some international friends thrown in), and my sister Janis is the host. I already had the big big party last Saturday at M Cafe, and another pool party (hopefully more laidback, less stressful this time) on Friday. Yet again, long-playing ang celebration ng lola nyo.

The most significant feeling that surfaced this week was my missing old dear friends so much. I miss you, guys. My college roommates (whom I rarely see anymore, only online or thru text), my ACLC friends, my Flipish girls, my high school amigas. I miss all of you. What they say about old friends is really true. Iba pa rin ang pinagsamahan.

So as to not make this post sound like a beer commercial, I will end it now with a firm resolution that I intend to keep until the end of my life: I will make time for my dear, cherished, true friends... most especially my old friends.

So there. I will post more about the musings that I had the past few days. I just need to gather myself and my thoughts for a bit.

Just came back from Boracay. (As usual, New Year's in Bora was awesome! But that'll be in another post.) I want to wish all of my friends from everywhere a very happy new year. Hope you celebrated it with a bang.

I didn't the usual "New Year's Resolutions" the last time. I was too tamad. Now, however, instead of "resolutions", I am going to post "New Year Reminders". Nuggets of wisdom to help me remember to enjoy life, as it is short and sweet. I actually received this from my cousin-in-law Mitsoy. So here goes:

I've been feeling under the weather the past three days. Which means I have been stuck in my apartment for thre f*cking long days. The worst was last Friday when I could barely stand up, my throat was dry and scratchy as hell, my whole body felt inflamed. As much as I had tons of stuff to finish at the office, I called in sick. These are the days that I miss the comforts and luxury of being at my parents' house, where my mom, my siblings, or the maids, can look after me. Argh! The discomforts of living on my own...

This is the 3rd day that I'm here on my bed, computer on my lap, me trying my best to stop the wheezing and the coughing by drinking water and juices (the natural method). Gosh, my head and my throat hurt as I type this. Must be the weather...or the effect of too much working, too much partying, too much activity...Whatever the cause, please Lord, let it go away na.

I look around at my apartment, the place is a mess! The maid hasn't cleaned it for 3 weeks na. I wana sort it out myself, but don't have the energy to do so. Aaaarrrghhh! There are so many things that I need to fix, but I am bound by the sickness to do nothing. (Which is a good thing on one hand, when I think about it).

So there folks, that explains the emo moments posts for this day. Wala lang. With sickness comes emo periods. Haaaaayyyyy. Pasensya na. Back to regular programming tayo when I get better...hopefully tomorrow po.

So I was in the comfort room of the ice plant party, waiting for my friend Tina to finish using the loo. A small, young-looking girl (she looked like she barely got out of puberty) went up behind me on the line. I smiled and told her that she can go ahead because I wasn't going to use the toilet. She sighed in relief, and somehow looked at me like I was a long lost friend. Then she asked a question that completely baffled me.

"Um, meron ho ba kayong party?" (Do you have "party"?)

I looked at her like she was a young naive dumb girl.

"Ah, party? Di ba eto party?", referring to the whole event (Ah, party? Isn't this whole thing a party?)

Then a gay-looking guy (presumably her friend) wrapped in fur went beside her, and both shared a knowing glance.

"Ay, hindi po. Party po. Alam mo na PARTY" with emphasis on the word PARTY (Ah, oh no. Party. You know, PARTY).

Then it dawned on me that they were referring to a different kind of PARTY, one that you pop and makes you hallucinate.

"Ay wala. Baka yung iba meron" (Ay no I don't have. Maybe the others have.)

And of course, I couldn't help it but the manang in me blurted out, "Pero hija, wag na. Wag na kayo mag-party" while putting a hand on her shoulder (But young girl, don't do it na. Don't take it)

Both kids were embarrassed, and went hurriedly out of the toilet.

Sheesh, I'm getting too old for this.

I have changed the title of this blog.

This used to be called "Random Thoughts of a Drunken Master's Mind". I think that title has become inappropriate considering that I have resolved to lessen my alc intake (more on that in another post), and has become irrelevant already for me personally.

Hence, the new title.. "What's The Plan?".

Since everyone would text, call, or email me and ask me what's the plan for that night or that weekend; since I always organize gimiks or inform everyone in the barkada about the latest happenings in the metro (at least those that I am invited to); since we always travel to a domestic or international destination and do our planning via email/online... I felt that the new titale will be more apt and more in line with what I am doing now.
